Sullivan Alumna Ann McCarty Awarded Honorary Degree for Lifetime Contribution to Physical Education

The Sullivan Alumni Association is delighted to celebrate the remarkable achievements of alumna Ann McCarty (née Walker), who has been awarded an Honorary Degree in Education in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Physical Education and her role in championing recognition for a generation of educators.

Ann's connection to Sullivan dates back to 1957/58 when she served as both Head Girl and Games Captain. At a time when opportunities for women in sport and Physical Education were far more limited than they are today, Ann set her sights on becoming a PE teacher. Despite some scepticism from those around her, she was determined to follow her passion.

She went on to attend the Ulster College of Physical Education (UCPE), completing a diploma programme that would be recognised as degree-level study today. What followed was a teaching career spanning more than 60 years, during which Ann inspired countless young people through her positivity, encouragement and unwavering belief that every child could succeed.

The honorary degree ceremony, held on 9 July 2026, recognised educators who trained in Physical Education between 1956 and 1979. The award was the culmination of a campaign led by Ann and fellow graduates Joan, Sheelagh and Carole, who worked tirelessly to ensure that their peers received the recognition they deserved.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Paul Bartholomew highlighted the significance of their achievement:

"Today we celebrate a lifetime of achievement by conferring honorary degrees on a cohort of educators in Physical Education from 1956 to 1979."

He went on to acknowledge the determination of the four women who helped bring about this recognition and noted:

"These pioneering women should never be overlooked. Future generations should know whose shoulders they stand on."

Ann's influence reaches far beyond the classroom. During her career, she played a significant role in developing sport at Strathearn School, helping generations of pupils discover confidence, teamwork and achievement through physical activity. She also co-founded Pegasus Hockey Club, a lasting legacy that continues to impact the sporting community today.

For those who were taught by Ann, coached by her, or played alongside her, she is remembered not only for her expertise and leadership but for her enthusiasm, kindness and belief in the potential of others.

As a former Head Girl and Games Captain who broke new ground for women pursuing careers in Physical Education, Ann's story is one of determination, leadership and service. This honorary degree is a fitting recognition of a lifetime dedicated to education, sport and inspiring others.
